Love this raw account of Western States Endurance Run by Flora ambassador, Stephanie Howe Violett. It's not always a first place finish that makes you a winner in the race.

THIS. This was my 2017 @westernstates100 Not the day I imagined, but still perfect in its own way. . . The high country was relentless, the canyons crippling with heat, & Cal street a true test of grit. All the way to Auburn. . . But I wasn't alone. The support from our wonderful community ultimately motivated me to persevere. From the selfless actions of @veganultrarunner1 who put his race in hold to walk devils thumb with me to make sure I didn't pass out, to @mackeydave1 who took me under his wing in the med tent and brought me back to life, to Elke Truscott, who fed me broth until I was able to walk out of devils thumb, an hour later. . . Then seeing friends & crew in Foresthill cheering me on, and passing @ultrarunnerkc on Cal street, having a battle of her own. Tears in both of our eyes. Then coming acrosss @ywangruns passed out on the trail, reminding me it could me so much worse. . . Then the Queen, @runningmegleg floating by after stopping to give me a hug as the tears flowed out of control. Then the hugs and comforting words from @jasonkoop and @ajoneswilkins at the river. . . And a silent boat ride across the river in the dark with @zachviolett, who assured me there was nothing else we had planned Saturday night except a moonlight stroll to Auburn. . . I was never alone. . . I wouldn't change a thing. An easy day pales in comparison to a day like this. And when everything falls apart and yet you find the strength to continue... THAT is success. And it's tragically beautiful. In the words of @ajoneswilkins "You finish what you start" And that I did. #christmascardworthy . . Western States truly crushed me, but I love it even more for it. So much has to go right for a 100 mile to come together. But that's not where the real stories lie. No, the real stories are made on days like this when everything falls to pieces but you pick yourself up and just keep going. Thank you @westernstates100 for showing me how strong I am ❤️
Ready to roll at Mt. WA tomorrow! This will be my 4th time on The Big Hill (hey as they say "it's only one hill!....that has 4700'/1500m of climb over 7.6miles/12km for a 12% average uphill grade. It would be nice to be back under 1 hour again this year (something that I have not been able to do since starting longer ultras). I have very fond memories of winning the US Mountain Champs here way back in 2012 (58:27). This race will officially start my "summer of mountain running" as I have the Mont Blanc Marathon in Chamonix next week, Speedgoat 50km in July and then UTMB100 in Sept! Best of luck to those racing tomorrow and remember the view is worth the climb! #sagerunning #anysurfaceanydistance #timetofly @hokaoneone @compressport @julbo_eyewear @nathansportsinc @drymaxsocks @squirrelsnutbutter @ugobars @trailbutter @florahealthy @stravarun @averybrewingco (had to leave my beer at the airport as I didn't have time to check a bag!) @spring_energy (enter code "Sage" for 10% discount)
